Visit to Granada (February 22-23)

We bring you a guest post by Katherine Martin and Sarah Kearney, two of the UNC students studying with us this semester. Katherine provided us with the text and photos 3, 4, and 7, while Sarah took pictures 1, 2, 5, and 6.

The weekend of February 22-23 the UNC in Sevilla program took a class trip to Granada, Spain! I LOVED it!! Granada is located to the east of Sevilla, about a 3-hour bus ride away. It is nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the town had a very cool and laid back vibe. The town is known for the Alhambra, a famous structure where the royalty lived. It is almost like a “city within a city” in the Alhambra. With its walled exterior and beautiful view looking down over the city of Granada, the Alhambra was definitely a neat sight to see.

We were lucky enough to visit the Alhambra and have a guided tour in Spanish by one of our very own professors!

Inside the Alhambra were spectacular decorations of Muslim origin and influence. The interior of the Alhambra is filled with many fountains and small “rivers” running through it. Water symbolizes la vida and in many places there are cross formations with small rivers of water on the floors of the patios. It was so neat to be able to see these structures that we have been learning about in our classes while in Sevilla. This trip to Granada with UNC was by far one of my favorite trips. It gave us time to not only get to know each other better, but to explore another fantastic city in Spain.

Introduction to the CINECU blog

During the past year, the staff at CINECU (Centro Internacional de Estudios Culturales) has been working to update and increase our online presence. We have done a major overhaul of our program’s website and created a Facebook page, in addition to beginning this blog. Our general goal with these different media outlets is to communicate about the opportunities that our academic programs in Seville offer, as well as to maintain a connection with current and former students in our program.

In particular the goal of this blog is to provide a platform for speaking about experiences that students have during their time in Seville with CINECU and topics relevant to those experiences. Studying abroad can be important and life-changing but, like many important events in life, taking that first step forward can be intimidating. Many of our students receive their passports only shortly before coming to Seville which, consequently, is their first trip outside of the United States. We hope that this blog will allow anyone considering time abroad to see how their peers overcome the challenges that come with studying abroad, as well as how they explore new places, try new foods, meet new people, and all the other fun moments that arise while studying in Seville. Both students and staff members will contribute and, for now at least, all entries will be written in English. Hopefully this new year will allow us to present a new perspective on the international student’s experience in Seville, so please stay tuned.
