Welcome to UNC in Sevilla Summer 2017

The UNC in Sevilla program offers two distinct summer programs. These programs provide students with the opportunity to study Spanish language and culture, as well as other subjects. Classes are taken with other summer program students at the Centro Internacional de Estudios Culturales (CINECU).

The UNC in Sevilla-Summer Program is designed for students with various academic interests. Participants in this six week program will study Spanish language and culture. The program is divided into advanced and intermediate levels and students will be placed according to their level of Spanish.

UNC in Sevilla Course Offerings

Courses for the Intermediate Level – Nivel intermedio

For students who have completed Spanish 204/4 and/or Spanish 260/21 or 255/23 or the equivalent.
All Intermediate students will take the following course:

SEVI 336 – CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE SPANISH EMPIRE / Historia cultural de España y su imperio

A general introduction to the political and cultural history of Spain.

LANGUAGE COURSE:

Students will choose one of the following courses depending on individual background in language. If you have not completed Spanish 260/21 (Introduction to Spanish and Spanish American Literature) or 255/23 (Conversation I) you are required to choose SEVI 265 Spanish for the Professions:

SEVI 265 SPANISH FOR THE PROFESSIONS / El español para las profesiones.

A course emphasizing the vocabulary and structures of the language of mass communications, business, health professions, and political institutions. This course may be used as a fifth semester course for both Spanish department minors (Hispanic Studies and Spanish for the Professions).

SEVI 300 ADVANCED GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION / Curso avanzado de gramática y redacción.

A review of major topics in Spanish grammar, with special attention to the correct usage of these structures in writing. Emphasis on the development of idiomatic written expression. Includes frequent compositions.

Courses for the Advanced Level – Nivel avanzado

For students who have completed Spanish 300/50 (Advanced Grammar and Composition) or the equivalent.

Each student will choose two of the following three modules:

SEVI 346 – THE HISTORY OF SPANISH ART / Historia del arte español

Introduction to the history of Spain and the major styles of Spanish art.

SEVI 361 HISTORY AND ANALYSIS OF SPANISH FILM / Historia y análisis del cine español

A brief tour of the history of Spanish film from its orgins through today. This course will analyze films in order to help students better understand Spanish Society and increase confidence in their ability to communicate (via reading, writing, speaking and listening) in Spanish.

SEVI 425 SPAIN TODAY / España Inmediata

An historical analysis and contextualization of daily occurrences in Spain. This course renders special attention to Spanish political, social and economic situation, and the analysis of its international relations (mainly European Union, Arab countries, Latin America countries and U.S.A.). Also it analyzes topics such as the relations between the Catholic Church and the State, the Spanish nationalisms or immigration.

SEVI 371 Studies in Spanish Literature / Análisis de la literatura española

Study of the literatures of Spain centering on representative authors and texts from various literary movements, situates within their sociohistorical contexts.

Academic Info

Course Load
You will take two classes for a total of 6 credit hours.

Registration Deadlines
You will register for classes before arriving in Sevilla. You will be allowed to make changes to your schedule during the first two days of classes.

Notes on Registration
As is true for registration at your home college or university, it is the responsibility of each student to make sure that (s)he has officially registered all course changes with the program.

Non-UNC students should be aware of their home institution’s policy regarding courses and credit hours.

Class Attendance
Classes will be held Monday-Friday. You are expected to attend every class, take all exams as scheduled by the professor, and turn in written work as required for the individual course.

You should also be aware that:

  • Traveling is an educational experience, but you are expected to schedule your traveling around your academic needs, not vice versa. You should plan to travel before the program begins or after the program has ended, not during the official program dates. If you are out of town and in the process miss an exam or fail to turn in written work, you will receive an “F” for that portion of your grade.


Grades
All grades (notas, calificaciones) in courses will be based either on a number scale (1-10, 10 being the highest grade) or the words sobresaliente, notable, aprobado, suspenso. Students will need to receive a grade of 5 or aprobado in order to receive UNC transfer equivalency (TREQ) credit. Please refer to the Credit Information Sheet on the UNC Study Abroad website.
